This year's annual Atlanta Street Dance, (we think it's the 23rd) was a roaring success. The weather cooperated perfectly with clear skies and slightly cooler temperatures, creating perfect conditions for the pie and ice cream social benefitting the Atlanta Fire Department and a little later, dancing in the street to the strains of standards and jazz numbers provided by the Band. Attendance seemed to be close to record levels, estimated at 250 - 300. Hard to tell with so many people moving around and all of the kids having a grand time being in three places at the same time.
After opening with the Ellington hit Don't Get Around Much Anymore, the crowd was treated to a visual spectacle on the second number. Bob Arbuckle (age 87) and Shirly Sullivan (age 78) cavorted to He's Got The Whole World In His Hands in full cow costume. The choreographed dance steps they performed were pretty impressive and entertaining. It was udderly delightful. Even more impressive was the fact that they danced all night long, never seeming to tire! Possibly the only other couple who was keeping up with them was Jerry and Kathy Fettig, dazzling the crowd with their professional moves, dips, and swoops. Overall dance participation was decent, especially with the traditional Hokey Pokey song led by Roberta. At least 25 folks of all ages were puttin' their left foot in and out, albeit somewhat reluctantly and only after being drafted by Roberta.
The second set started off with a rousing Piano Boogie, featuring Greg Duncan at the keyboard. The evening would hardly be complete without the beautiful song by Hoagy Carmichael (not the sandwich guy, but the composer) Stardust. Gary and Karen Rouch performed a solo dance to the first refrain, commemorating their sixth wedding anniversary at which they danced their very first number as a married couple in this same location.
The magnificent Indiana summer evening wound down with Moonlight Serenade, the Bossa Nova number Wave, and ended with Tennesse Waltz. The fund raising was a success; fifty-eight pies and twenty-one gallons of ice cream were consumed, raising over $1000 for the Fire Department. Many thanks to all who participated and attended.
The evening did have a couple of hitches - two fans experienced falls, but fortunately the EMT personnel were just a few steps away and were able to attend to them. We wish them well, and a speedy recovery. Also, Jim Brewer was feeling poorly and was unable to attend, but Blondie (Hope) did her usual superb performance and added a few extra vocal numbers.
Another performance is coming up this Saturday in the Hall as usual; it should be a barn-burner. Don't miss it.
