Cooler temperatures, much cooler temperatures greeted the exuberant guests at the Hall on Saturday Night. It's been a year of extremes - first the extremely wet spring during which the farmers were nearly left out standing in their fields, followed by the July drought. Also during the dead of summer with the endless 90+ degree days, and then suddenly Womp! with the impact of a rotten apple splattering on the ground below, the mercury plummets to the mid-40s overnight. Ah well, Indiana-never a dull weather moment.
The night took off with a bang and seemed to gain momentum throughout the night. A few of the Band members had played earlier in the day at the Noblesville Senior Center Birthday meeting, so they were warmed up. The crowd was in a good mood, all healthy, wealthy, and wise. Opening up the first set with the number I Can't Give You Anything But Love, the Band sailed on with some high-energy numbers before finally taking a breather on the ballad Only You. This was a top number by the Platters; it was also performed by Ringo Starr from the Beatles.
The cookies and brownies came out just before the end of the first set, it was birthday time for Velda Boenitz. Steve was back in town, along with special friend Lee Ann. The first bassist (Greg G) was out and Mr. Tony Harris was back in the corner, playing tighter with each number.
The second set opened with the 1941 Ellington theme, Take The A Train, followed by When You're Smiling. The latter number was performed on a recent Seinfeld rerun by Mel Torme, and joined on the last phrase by Kramer. Hilarious.
The Band closed the evening out with What A Friend We Have In Jesus.
Remember, no show on September 24. Come and check out the Atlanta Earth Festival if you like, lots to see and buy.
